HCFN is an excellent source for financial and regulatory news and opinion as well as thought leadership through the publication (print), the online version and their blogs written by industry leaders. This publication provides insight into the economics and emerging trends of hospitals, medical group management and a wide healthcare landscape. Click here, to visit the site.
Hospitals & Health Networks
Doubtless many conference participants are familiar with this outstanding publication, but some may not be aware of the opportunity to subscribe to the electronic version of the publication. Visit H&HN.com and look to the top left of the home page for the promo to subscribe to the electronic version. The web-enabled version is convenient, "green," and it makes sharing articles from the publication a breeze.
ACP Hospitalist
I suggest two resources associated with the American College of Physicians' publication, ACP Hospitalist. The blog, is timely and brief and always worthy of consideration and the online Medicine Track, always has useful clinical information for practicing hospitalists.

Pre Conference Conversation Starter:
Limited dollars for cash bonuses have forced organizations to look beyond using money as a motivator. Many high performing healthcare organizations are successfully using non financial approaches to motivate and engage employees. This trend is not new and numerous studies have concluded for years that if people are fairly paid, non financial motivators are as effective as extra cash. In many cases, the evidence suggests that they are even more effective as recruiting and retention tools. The top three have been reported as: individual leadership attention, praise from immediate managers and project focused career development (such as the opportunity to lead or co-lead a project related strategic initiative). Why are these approaches so successful? Because of the underlying message; leadership values your contribution; leadership cares about your professional development and leadership works hard to create career growth opportunities for you.
Do you believe non cash motivators are effective?

The War For Talent By Ed Michaels, Helen Handfield-Jones and Beth Axelrod
Harvard Business School Press, 2001
This book presents conclusions from three major research initiatives conducted by McKinsey & Company around talent management. These findings reinforce the strategic importance of human capital because of the enormous value that better talent creates in any industry. It also strongly suggests that a company's long term success will be determined by how strong its talent pool is.
