Mt. San Rafael Hospital: Leading the Way in Attestation for Meaningful Use Stage 3

Hear how MEDHOST helped Mt. San Rafael Hospital go from a paper-based records environment to meeting Meaningful Use requirements on an accelerated timeline.

Mt. San Raphael Case Study cover imageBackground

Mt. San Rafael Hospital is a critical access, 25-bed rural hospital located in the community of Trinidad, Colorado. Mt. San Rafael Hospital treatment facilities include the hospital, emergency department (ED), and two outpatient clinics. Mt. San Rafael Hospital serves a wide geographic area surrounding Trinidad, the southern-most city in the state off I-25 into New Mexico. The hospital’s ED annually serves approximately 11,000 patients of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics and covers an ambulance district that brings local families from as far away as two hours to receive emergency care. Mt. San Rafael Hospital provides essential emergency treatment, acute care, condition management, and inpatient services needs of the widely-dispersed demographic found in a rural farming and mining community.

The Challenge

Technology Barriers

In 2015, Mt. San Rafael Hospital was lagging in meeting Meaningful Use requirement deadlines. Making the challenge even greater, Mt. San Rafael Hospital lacked a centralized IT system, was operating with a paper-based records environment, and relied on an outdated system of manual files and medical records that was cumbersome, time-consuming, and inefficient. Prior to MEDHOST electronic health record (EHR) implementation, there was no centralized IT system at the hospital, and the IT team faced major time constraints.

Transforming the facility’s HIT system from a paper-based medical records environment to an EHR system involved numerous variables. Along with the decision-making process involved in such a large investment, Mt. San Rafael Hospital was facing several challenges with its IT transformation:

  • Shifting from a paper-based environment to an EHR
  • Staff time and manpower constraints
  • Hospital board buy-in
  • Limited financial resources
  • MU deadlines/possible fines
  • No centralized IT system
  • Tight turnaround from implementation to go-live
